Meta lets AI agents handle WhatsApp Business setup
Meta has launched a new MCP server allowing AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business accounts on companies' behalf, replacing a previously cumbersome multi-tool process.
Meta announced on Tuesday a new tool designed to simplify how businesses set up WhatsApp Business messaging, the service that lets companies communicate with customers through WhatsApp. The announcement came alongside news of Meta's new AI-focused subscription plans.
Previously, setting up WhatsApp Business required developers to juggle multiple separate tools, including the Developer Console, Business Manager, the API reference, and their code editor. Now, developers can simply describe what they need to their preferred AI agent and let it handle the process.
How it works
The new capability is powered by the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that connects AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. It expands Meta's existing lineup of MCP servers, which previously covered ad management and app configuration monitoring.
The AI agent can take over much of the routine setup work: creating a business's WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying its phone number, registering for Cloud API access, and checking compliance with Terms of Service. Businesses can also ask the agent to create or edit messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor issues — such as a failed payment method or incomplete business verification — that may previously have gone unnoticed.
During setup, a second Meta tool, the Meta Social Technologies MCP, can also be used to find API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors.
Meta joins a growing list of tech companies — including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft — that already offer MCP servers enabling AI agents to securely interact with their platforms.
