Sleep Expert Warns: Sleep-Deprived Driver as Dangerous as Drunk Driver

Every fifth serious road accident in Latvia is alcohol-related, but lack of sleep poses similar risks. Over 60% of drivers have driven while sleepy in the past year. Experts urge evaluating fitness before driving and taking breaks if needed.

According to the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), one in five serious road accidents in Latvia is linked to alcohol. Insurance technology company Balcia, participating in CSDD's campaign “Party – Sleep It Off,” reminds that even with insurance, drivers must cover losses themselves in such cases. In recent years, total losses have reached nearly €500,000.

Edgars Korzāns, Head of Balcia Latvia, emphasizes that drunk driving is a conscious choice with severe financial consequences, but fatigue—which impairs reaction and decision-making—is equally dangerous. A Balcia survey found that over 60% of Latvian drivers have driven while significantly sleepy at least once in the past year, with those aged 30–39 most likely to ignore tiredness.

Sleep specialist Dr. Marta Celmiņa explains that a sleep-deprived person drives similarly to an intoxicated one. She highlights the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (snoring), which disrupts sleep quality and increases the likelihood of microsleep episodes—brief unintentional naps that can be catastrophic at high speeds. Celmiņa advises delaying a trip if drowsy or taking a 15- to 20-minute power nap, which restores alertness without entering deep sleep.

The campaign “Party – Sleep It Off” urges holidaymakers to plan safe travel and assess their condition before driving. On June 19–20, a special “Sleep Station” will operate at the Spice shopping center, featuring contests and information on the importance of quality rest.
