Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 on Sunday in a La Liga match at the Camp Nou, the Spanish top-flight football league's biggest fixture, known as El Clasico. Forward Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for Real, the second coming late on. The result cut Barcelona's lead at the top of the table to three points; a defeat would have left Real nine points behind.

Mourinho's record

Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho returned to Real Madrid this summer, 13 years after his first spell in charge. The win made him just the third Real manager to go six Clasicos in a row without defeat, joining Miguel Munoz (1962 to 1965) and Vicente del Bosque (2001 to 2003). In his last six meetings with Barcelona he has won four and drawn two, and his overall Clasico record stands at six wins and six defeats.

The result also ended Barcelona's nine-game unbeaten run in domestic competition. For Real it was only a second win in eight games against the Catalan side.

Managers' comments

After the match Mourinho said Real do not play to win at the Camp Nou but to win La Liga. He credited the players and said the squad has the quality and mindset needed. In his view, a mix of different talents in midfield gives the team balance in defence and quality in attack. He urged the team to keep going in the same way and not get carried away.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said his side lacked freshness after a demanding few weeks. He said small details decide big games and that on this occasion they did not go Barcelona's way.
