Musical Spirograph turns generative composition into a browser doodle

A newly released browser tool called Musical Spirograph combines two beloved concepts: the geometric drawing toy Spirograph and generative music composition. The Verge's weekend editor Terrence O'Brien wrote about discovering and playing with the tool.

The core mechanic is straightforward. A set of points move across the screen according to mathematical equations, tracing hypotrochoid and epitrochoid patterns. As these points pass through a series of concentric rings, specific musical notes are triggered, producing a hypnotic combination of visual pattern and sound.

Extensive customization

While the basic concept is engaging on its own, the tool offers considerable depth for customization. Users can choose from six different virtual rotors and run up to three drawing arms simultaneously, alongside numerous other parameters that shape the resulting pattern.

On the musical side, there are six selectable scales, or notes can be fully customized by the user. The app also includes six synth presets, adjustable quantization and BPM settings, and the option to expand the ring layout to cover two octaves.

O'Brien did note some shortcomings, saying the sound engine is not particularly polished and tends to produce clipping and audio artifacts. He also expressed a wish for MIDI output so the tool could be used to control other instruments. Despite these limitations, he described Musical Spirograph as a lot of fun to get lost in.
