Three people evacuate burning house in Jelgava overnight
A fire broke out overnight in a two-storey residential building on Kalnciema Road in Jelgava, with three residents escaping before firefighters arrived. Rescue services also responded to several other incidents across Latvia during the same period.
Late last night, a fire broke out in a two-storey residential building on Kalnciema Road in Jelgava, damaging a room and roof section covering about 30 square metres on the first floor. The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received the call at 11:23 pm and told the LETA news agency that three residents had already evacuated the building on their own before firefighters arrived, meaning no injuries were reported. Firefighting work at the scene wrapped up shortly after 1 am.
Other emergency calls overnight
The same night, VUGD crews responded to several other incidents. In Ogre municipality, a deceased person was pulled from a pond. In the Galēni parish of Preiļi municipality, a person had gotten lost in a forest; rescuers located them using the sound and light signals of a fire truck. A day earlier, near Jūrmala, firefighters rescued a person from the sea after a small aircraft accident.
24-hour overview
Between 6:30 am on August 15 and 6:30 am on August 16, VUGD logged 58 calls in total. Of these, 18 involved firefighting, including one forest fire, 23 were rescue operations, and 17 turned out to be false alarms.
