Not the GameCube, not the Wii U: This was Nintendo's biggest console flop

Nintendo's actual worst-selling console wasn't the GameCube or Wii U, but the 1995 Virtual Boy, which lasted less than a year on shelves. It can now be experienced again through Nintendo Switch Online.

When people think of Nintendo's console failures, the GameCube and Wii U usually come up first. The GameCube finished third in its generation behind the PS2 and Xbox, while the Wii U suffered from confusing hardware and poor marketing. Yet both sold far more units than Nintendo's true worst performer: the Virtual Boy.

The Virtual Boy launched in North America in August 1995, shortly after its Japanese debut, arriving during a quiet stretch for Nintendo hardware following the SNES's 1991 release. Its last North American game shipped in March 1996, after which Nintendo quietly discontinued the system. It never launched in Europe at all. By June 1996, Nintendo reported just 770,000 units sold worldwide — far below the Wii U's 13.6 million, which remains the next-lowest total.

Uncomfortable design and physical side effects

The console used a binocular-style viewfinder on a stand to create a stereoscopic 3D effect, but using it required leaning awkwardly toward the device, and no strap was ever offered for support. The display showed only black and red, since full color would have raised production costs. Combined with the internal mirror system used to generate 3D images, this often caused eye strain, headaches, and nausea. Nintendo even built in a reminder to take a break roughly every 15 minutes.

The game library was similarly weak, missing major franchises like Zelda, Metroid, and Kirby, with most titles feeling more like tech demos than complete games. Virtual Boy Wario Land and the original Mario Tennis are generally considered the system's standout releases.

After years of near-silence on the console, Nintendo announced in September 2025 that Virtual Boy games would be added to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, playable using either a cardboard viewer or a plastic replica stand to recreate the original 3D viewing experience.
