Japanese carmaker Nissan offers its Qashqai crossover with a third-generation e-POWER system, in which only an electric motor turns the wheels. Prices start at 34,590 euros with a discount, and fuel consumption is 4.3–4.5 litres per 100 km.

Japanese carmaker Nissan is offering its mass-market Qashqai crossover with the e-POWER drive system, now in its third generation. According to the Latvian outlet Jauns.lv, the car could cover as much as 1,200 kilometres on a single tank, as its headline states.

Price and consumption

Unlike the Nissan X-Trail, the Qashqai gets the e-POWER system only with front-wheel drive. Prices start at 34,590 euros, including a discount. The main benefit is fuel economy: consumption is 4.3–4.5 litres per 100 kilometres. These figures allow Nissan to compete with hybrid models from Chinese manufacturers.

How the system works

People often assume e-POWER is an ordinary hybrid combining a petrol engine and electricity. In fact, this Nissan is an electric car by design. The internal combustion engine, a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo unit, works solely as a generator. In all driving conditions, the wheels are turned only by an electric motor.

The source describes the technology as truly unique among mass-market crossovers.
