From February 12, 2027, food service businesses — including restaurants, cafés, and other outlets offering drinks or ready-made food for takeaway — will be required to allow customers to use their own containers when collecting orders. The requirement stems from the European Union's Packaging Regulation.
What the rule means in practice
In practical terms, customers will be able to bring their own box or container to a café or shop and have their order — for example, a salad or a cutlet — packed into it, instead of relying on single-use packaging provided by the business.
