Normunds Rutulis Jokes on Stage: 'Don't Worry, I Was Driven' After DUI Accident
Singer Normunds Rutulis, who caused a crash while drunk driving in March, joked at a concert that he had been driven there. His trial for DUI is scheduled for February 2027.

Popular Latvian musician Normunds Rutulis, who was involved in a drink-driving incident this spring, has returned to the stage with a touch of irony. At a recent concert in Vecpiebalga, he reportedly told the audience not to worry because he had been brought there by someone else. The joke, shared on social media platform X, drew mixed reactions – some found it humorous, while others recalled the seriousness of his offense.
On March 14, 2026, Rutulis was driving a Cupra Formentor in Riga with a blood alcohol level of 2 promille. He crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Mercedes Benz. Although he admitted guilt, prosecutors could not reach a plea agreement because the proposed sentence involved actual imprisonment.
As a result, the criminal case will be heard by the Riga City Court on February 3, 2027. Under Latvian law, the offense carries a penalty of up to one year in prison, probation, confiscation of the vehicle, and a five-year driving ban.
Despite the pending legal proceedings, Rutulis has resumed performing, and his lighthearted comment suggests he is trying to move on. However, the court case is still ahead.
