Norway's Largest Bank DNB to Cut About 400 Jobs as AI Takes Over Tasks
DNB, Norway's largest bank, plans to eliminate roughly 400 jobs as artificial intelligence takes over some tasks. The changes may also affect its Riga office, which employs nearly 600 people.

DNB, Norway's largest bank, announced a reorganisation on 6 October that will remove about 400 positions. The cuts are planned in the bank's technology and services division, as a growing number of tasks can be handed to artificial intelligence (AI). The changes will also affect the bank's employees in Latvia.
What AI already does
The bank already uses AI for customer data checks, document processing and programming. This lets it complete part of the work faster and with fewer staff.
The bank's chief executive, Kjerstin Braathen, says AI is changing how the company works and serves customers. According to her, the bank is already seeing significant benefits and is therefore adapting its organisation to the new reality.
Impact on the Riga office
DNB's Riga office employs nearly 600 people. According to unofficial information, about 150 employees who carry out customer data checks could lose their jobs. The bank has not officially confirmed this figure.
The Riga office operates as an international service centre rather than a traditional bank serving customers in Latvia.
Timeline and other reasons
The headcount reduction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. DNB stresses that the reorganisation is linked not only to the introduction of AI, but also to simplifying work processes and improving efficiency.
