Who built the mysterious new AI model Ox Alpha?
A free AI model called Ox Alpha released on OpenRouter has sparked widespread speculation about who actually developed it, since its creator has chosen to remain anonymous. Guesses range from Chinese AI firm Z.ai to Microsoft's unreleased MAI model.

A new, free artificial intelligence model called Ox Alpha appeared on the OpenRouter platform on Thursday. It is described as a reasoning model built for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workloads. The official listing labels it a "stealth model," developed and operated by a third-party provider that has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview phase.
The model quickly drew attention online, fueling a wave of speculation about its true origin. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is currently acquiring OpenRouter, called the model "very impressive" in a post on X.
Speculation over its origin
Much of the guessing has centered on China. AI analyst Andrew Curran noted on Friday that initial suspicion focused on the GLM models developed by Chinese company Z.ai, though he added that confidence in that theory has since faded. Similarly, an article on Wccftech initially pointed to GLM as the likely source before an update suggested Ox Alpha could instead be an unreleased version of Microsoft's MAI model.
On Reddit, opinions remain split — some users insist the model "can't" be Chinese-made, while others express "high confidence" that it is. The model's actual developer has not been officially confirmed.
