In the Bay Ridge neighborhood of New York City, often called 'Little Palestine,' Arab American football fans have rallied behind Spain for the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina. While not all are avid football followers, political ties strongly influence their allegiance.

Zein Rimawi, a 72-year-old chairman of the Arab American Federation nonprofit, stated that football cannot be separated from politics. He supports countries that back Palestinian causes. Spain, which recognized the State of Palestine in 2024 and has been a vocal critic of Israel's war in Gaza, is a natural choice.

Talal Abdraboh, a worker at Al Reef Bakery on 5th Avenue, echoed these sentiments. He highlighted Spain's historical and cultural ties to the Arab world, particularly Andalusia. 'It's not about bias against Argentina. If any team that’s not Arab were facing Spain, we would support Spain,' he said. 'We’re for Spain with all our hearts.'

Mahmoud Kasem, owner of Al-Aqsa Bakery, set up a large TV screen outside his restaurant and gave out free falafel during major Arab team matches. He witnessed unity among Palestinians, Lebanese, Moroccans, and others. Kasem praised the Spanish government's stance: 'When Palestine was bombed, they took a stance. When Lebanon was bombed, they took a stance. They stand with humanity.' He also noted that many Palestinians support Real Madrid and Barcelona.

However, not all Arab American fans support Spain. Some, like 24-year-old barber Karim Bouzeraa, remain loyal to Argentina because of Lionel Messi. 'Messi is a legend,' Bouzeraa said. 'Twenty years of competition is not something easy.' He argued that Israeli flags seen during Argentina's match with Egypt do not represent the team.

Despite differing choices, the tournament has showcased Arab community unity. Many hope that Arab leaders will follow the diaspora's example and eliminate borders and disputes.
