Scotland international Hamish Watson has joined Castres Olympique after leaving Edinburgh. The 34-year-old flanker agreed a one-year deal with the French Top 14 club.

Castres moved to recruit Watson after Dalton Papali'i was ruled out long-term following surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon. Watson, who spent last season on loan at Leicester Tigers, said he had to make a quick decision after being contacted by Castres.

"The opportunity to perform in French rugby is a fantastic opportunity for me," he told the club website. "Given Dalton Papali'i's injury, Castres Olympique contacted me in recent days and I had to make a very quick decision. I did so with enthusiasm."

Watson, born in Manchester, has 59 Scotland caps. He joined Edinburgh in 2011 and made nearly 160 appearances. Castres, who finished 10th in the Top 14 last season, said they are getting a player known for his work rate and ability to win ball at rucks – someone who has competed at the highest level of international rugby for over a decade.
