Nvidia to officially expand DLSS 5 to older RTX 40 GPUs, but players still won't get full control
Nvidia says its new DLSS 5 AI rendering technology, initially planned only for the latest RTX 50 cards, will officially be brought to RTX 40-series GPUs as well, though for gamers it will remain a simple on/off toggle.

Nvidia is adjusting its original rollout plans for DLSS 5, its new AI rendering technology. The feature was initially set to launch with just one game and only on the latest RTX 50-series graphics cards. However, after modders managed to port a leaked version of DLSS 5 to run on virtually any hardware with all settings maxed out, Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed to The Verge that the company will officially bring the technology to older RTX 40-series GPUs as well.
According to Nvidia's statement, the company's current focus is on optimizing performance for the RTX 50 Series, with model updates expected later this fall. Only once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned does Nvidia plan to work on expanding official support to the RTX 40 Series.
As for even older RTX 30 and RTX 20-series cards, which modders also managed to target despite poor performance and frequent crashes, Maharaj said the focus right now is squarely on the 50 series, describing the approach as "one step at a time."
Limited control for players
While unofficial mods allowed users to freely adjust every DLSS 5 parameter, Nvidia confirmed that for gamers the technology will remain a simple on-or-off toggle. More granular artistic controls — including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, and automatic or custom masking — will be reserved for developers. The company noted, however, that developers could choose to expose some of these settings in their own in-game menus, as has happened with earlier DLSS features.
One advantage of DLSS 5 is its ease of integration: its AI models can automatically recognize and separate different objects within a scene, such as faces, fabrics, and foliage, without developers needing to manually label every asset. The technology also includes a native plugin for Unreal Engine 5, as well as dedicated SDKs for developers.
Nvidia stopped short of reconfirming that DLSS 5 will indeed ship in the previously announced titles, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, and Resident Evil Requiem, saying only that more games are on the way and that developers are actively working on integrating the technology.
