England’s national football team and its fans have started a new tradition at this year’s World Cup: singing Oasis’ song “Wonderwall” together after each victory. The custom began after England’s first win in Dallas and continued after successes in New Jersey and Atlanta.

Following England’s 3-2 round-of-16 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher posted on social media: “Come on England, come on ‘Wonderwall’.” Songwriter Noel Gallagher also described the moment as special, noting that the song belongs to the people and that it created a magical moment between fans and players.

England captain Harry Kane expressed his delight, calling the shared singing one of his favorite moments in an England shirt. Former goalkeeper Joe Hart emphasized that such moments allow players to momentarily forget the pressure of professional sport and simply be with the fans.

Although England fans still have classics like “Three Lions”, “Vindaloo”, and “Sweet Caroline” in their repertoire, “Wonderwall” has become the symbol of this World Cup. The song’s surge in popularity has returned it to the top 40 of the UK singles chart.

Music critics attribute the success of “Wonderwall” to its simple melody and emotional message. The lyrics are not tied to any specific person or event, allowing each fan to find their own meaning – whether it’s the England team, a player, or hope for winning the World Cup.

England fans hope the tradition will continue all the way to the final in New York. First, Thomas Tuchel’s team must overcome Norway in the quarterfinals.
