Ogre police warn dog owners: fine for a stray pet can reach €1,750
Ogre municipal police are urging dog owners to check their fences and gates, warning that violating animal welfare rules can lead to a fine of up to €1,750. Residents are also asked to report stray dogs, especially those on roadways.
The Ogre municipal police have appealed to dog owners to carefully inspect their fences, gates and any other spots where a pet could escape from its yard. According to the police, a dog roaming freely poses several risks: it may get lost, wander onto a roadway, endanger passers-by or other animals, and even cause a traffic accident.
Possible penalties
Responding to a resident's question about what punishment applies in such cases, the police explained that violations of animal welfare requirements can result in a fine of up to 350 fine units for an individual. Since one fine unit equals five euros, the maximum penalty can total €1,750.
Stricter sanctions apply to legal entities, where the fine ranges from 22 to 500 fine units, equivalent to between €110 and €2,500.
Call to report stray dogs
The municipal police are asking residents not to ignore stray dogs but to report them instead. This is especially important when an animal is found on a road or otherwise poses a danger to people and other traffic participants.
