Ogre United snatches victory in Valmiera to reach Cup quarterfinals
Ogre United came from behind twice to beat Valmiera 3–2 after extra time in a dramatic Latvian Cup round of 16 match, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Ogre United traveled to Valmiera on Sunday for their Latvian Cup round of 16 clash. Despite being forced to play with only 14 registered players – one of whom, Roja Bušs, was injured in the fourth minute – the visitors managed to secure a 3–2 extra-time victory.
Ogre took the lead first through Vadym Maschenko, who converted a cross from Markus Ivulāns. Valmiera quickly equalized from a penalty after goalkeeper Kristers Biščuhs fouled Alekss Tkačenko. Biščuhs saved Fražs Kermanī’s spot kick but could not stop the Tunisian from scoring on the rebound.
The second half saw Ogre dominate with 15 shots, twice hitting the crossbar, but Valmiera unexpectedly went ahead through a long-range strike from Vladimir Stepanov – a player who helped Ogre gain promotion to the top flight last season.
With time running out, Ogre pushed hard. Leifs Estevess Fernandess had a one-on-one chance but was denied by Valmiera’s 17-year-old goalkeeper Haralds Kalniņš. Then, in stoppage time, Tkačenko was sent off for hitting Robertu Adītāju. The numerical advantage paid off when Ernests Kalniņš headed into his own net from a long ball. Moments later, Markus Kalniņš ran past tired Valmiera defenders and scored to make it 3–2. In the second half of extra time, Fernandess added a fourth goal after a pass from Artem Marchuk.
Ogre United thus advanced to the Latvian Cup quarterfinals.
