Mārīte Tabita Kalniņa, a writer from Ogre whose debut children's book 'Nejaucēni' has received widespread acclaim, is this summer a candidate for the International Jānis Baltvilks Prize. She has been nominated in the 'Jaunaudze' category, awarded for the best debut in children's literature. The prize has been awarded annually for 22 years by the Latvian Council for Children's and Young Adult Literature, and the ceremony takes place on July 24, Baltvilks's birthday.

'Nejaucēni' tells a story of a true Latvian summer – adventures in nature, creativity, and time with family. The book's illustrations are by artist Alise Landsberga. Kalniņa says she feels honored to be nominated alongside two experienced authors, noting that the jury's discussions this year were very intense.

The writer also reveals a personal connection to Jānis Baltvilks: she met the poet and ornithologist during her elementary school years and still finds inspiration in his poetry. She emphasizes a shared respect for nature and the ability to see wonder in even the smallest creatures.

Until midnight on July 23, a public vote is taking place on the public media portal LSM.lv, where readers can choose the best and most beautiful book among the nominated works, including 'Nejaucēni'.
