As Midsummer approaches, nature is in full bloom, and decorating the festive table can be simple if natural materials are used. Darius Rimkus, head of interior design at IKEA, advises focusing on simplicity, naturalness, and lightness.
Basic Table Elements
The central elements are meadowsweet, a linen tablecloth, and Midsummer cheese. Ferns, meadow flowers, and oak branches create a special mood. Herbs such as dill, mint, or chives can also be used as decorations. Wreaths, a traditional Midsummer symbol, can be placed on the table, and their weaving can be a family activity.
Rimkus notes that perfection or symmetry is unnecessary – nature has no rules. Untreated materials like wood, linen, glass, and ceramics work best. A white tablecloth adds a festive feel, while neutral-toned dishes and a table runner highlight natural elements.
Arrangements and Personal Touch
Centerpieces of meadow flowers or greenery can completely change the atmosphere. Use no more than two or three colors, leaving room for plates and food. A personal touch comes from handwritten sayings or folk songs placed on each guest's plate. A small fern leaf or other meadowsweet accent can decorate the plate.
Lighting and Ambiance
Candles are essential, creating the warmth of a bonfire. Artificial candles are safer when children are present. Lemon-scented candles also repel mosquitoes in the evening. Additional lighting, such as solar-powered lanterns, should not overshadow the candles and bonfire.
Rimkus suggests reflecting on family traditions and associations with Midsummer before the holiday to create a unique table setting perfect for the specific family or group of friends.
