Excessive TV viewing in midlife may shrink the brain

A new study suggests that frequent television viewing in midlife is linked to smaller brain volumes and greater white matter damage, potentially increasing dementia risk.

Researchers from the University of Southern California and other institutions have found that heavy television viewing during midlife is associated with structural differences in the brain that are linked to aging and dementia. The study, published in the journal Alzheimer's and Dementia, analyzed data from around 1,700 participants with an average age of 53 who were part of the long-term Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Participants reported how often they watched television in their free time, ranging from "never/seldom" to "very often." More than two decades later, they underwent brain MRI scans.

Those who indicated watching TV "very often" had smaller volumes in brain regions crucial for memory, as well as reduced frontal and occipital lobe size. They also exhibited greater volumes of white matter hyperintensities, which are markers of small vessel disease and are associated with cognitive decline and stroke risk. These associations remained significant even after adjusting for physical activity, diabetes, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol use.

Interestingly, the study revealed that not all sedentary behavior has the same effect. Participants who spent much of their workday sitting actually showed larger frontal and occipital lobes and fewer white matter hyperintensities, suggesting that mentally engaging activities while seated may be beneficial. In contrast, passive TV viewing appears to be detrimental. The researchers speculate that the mental stimulation involved in many desk jobs might protect brain health.

The brain changes were more pronounced in men, indicating potential gender differences in vulnerability. However, the study has limitations: TV habits were self-reported, and no baseline MRI scans were taken, so cause-and-effect cannot be firmly established. Future studies with initial imaging are needed.

The findings suggest that public health recommendations should not only focus on reducing total sitting time but also on encouraging more mentally active pursuits during sedentary periods.
