People who have reached the age of 65 should avoid losing weight. This is according to the outlet DoctorPiter, as cited by the Latvian news site NRA in a look at which habits can genuinely help people live longer.

Muscle mass does not recover

The source states that when a person loses weight, up to half of the lost weight can be muscle mass. At this age, it does not regrow. Experts use this as the basis for the warning: in their view, it is better to live with excess weight than to die with a nice figure.

Physical activity

At the same time, moderate physical activity has been shown to be beneficial. Cardio and strength training are important for everyone, especially after the age of 40, in order to preserve muscle mass.

Diet and lifestyle

The publication also notes that it has not been proven that the Mediterranean diet benefits everyone. Its advantages are often explained not by the food itself but by a particular Levantine lifestyle: the ability to enjoy the moment, relax and not rush. Diet should be matched to genetics, region and ancestral traditions.

According to the source, even a burger can be healthy if it is made of high-quality meat with vegetables and herbs and eaten at an unhurried pace. Shrimp is given as an example: it absorbs mercury, so it should be eaten with seaweed, which removes heavy metals.

Early hypertension

In cases of early hypertension, meaning raised blood pressure, a doctor advises first putting work and rest in order, getting enough sleep and learning autogenic training, which helps lower blood pressure.
