Pärnu Hotels Optimistic for Summer Despite Drop in Finnish Tourists
Hotel operators in Estonia's summer capital, Pärnu, remain hopeful for a strong July and August despite a decline in Finnish visitors, with some hotels reporting healthy bookings and occupancy near 100 percent.

After a disappointing June, hoteliers in Pärnu, Estonia's prime summer destination, are cautiously optimistic about the peak months of July and August. The main concern is a noticeable drop in arrivals from Finland, traditionally the largest source of summer tourists. Industry representatives attribute this to Finland's economic struggles and a trend toward last-minute bookings, which complicates demand forecasting.
Kairi Lusik, manager of the Viiking Spa Hotel, reported that June was weaker than last year and that Finnish overnight stays in the first half of the year fell by one third. Nevertheless, she noted that July and August currently look promising. 'There is no reason to panic,' Lusik said, adding that Finns will still make up the majority of guests, alongside Latvians and domestic tourists.
Estonia Spa Hotels, however, experienced a stronger June compared to the previous year. CEO Andrus Aljas stated that summer bookings are keeping pace with 2022 and that occupancy may reach 100 percent. He did caution that August could be slightly weaker, but expressed satisfaction with growing visitor numbers from Lithuania and Germany. Aljas expressed hope that Finnish tourists would return as Finland's economy recovers.
In contrast, the Hestia Group, which operates hotels in several Baltic cities, reported a market decline in Pärnu. CEO Kaisa Mailend noted that July occupancy is currently lower than at the same time last year and that Pärnu is trailing behind Tallinn, Tartu, and Haapsalu. She suggested that Pärnu's marketing as solely a beach destination may be limiting its appeal and that diversifying its image could be key to future success.
Despite the mixed signals, the overall sentiment among Pärnu hotels is that summer reservations are holding up, and they anticipate a successful season if current trends continue.
