Five Common Summer Skincare Mistakes That Accelerate Aging
While many focus on sun protection, experts highlight other frequently overlooked mistakes that speed up skin aging during summer—from neglecting the neck and décolletage to improper use of active ingredients.

In summer, facial skin faces intense environmental factors: UV radiation, heat, wind, salty water, and air conditioning dryness can all contribute to premature aging. Although many prioritize sun protection, that alone is not enough. Beauty consultant Arta Tone from Apotheka notes that several seemingly harmless mistakes can accelerate wrinkle formation, pigmentation, and loss of firmness.
The first mistake is using SPF only at the beach. UV rays affect skin daily, even on cloudy days, and are a major cause of premature aging. Tone recommends daily use of SPF 30 or 50 on the face, neck, décolletage, ears, and lips, with regular reapplication.
The second mistake is ignoring the neck and décolletage. Skin in these areas is very thin and sensitive, so signs of aging can appear earlier than on the face. It's advised to use the same care products as for the face and to cleanse the neck in an upward motion from the chest to the chin.
The third mistake is overly aggressive exfoliation. After exfoliation in summer, skin becomes more sensitive to the sun, so abrasive scrubs and fruit acids should be avoided. Gentler options like enzyme or lactic acid peels are better, and the frequency should be adjusted to skin type.
The fourth mistake is neglecting sleep, water, and diet. Skin regeneration occurs during sleep, so 7–8 hours are important. In hot weather, at least 1.5–2 liters of water daily is needed, and the diet should include antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruits while avoiding sugar and processed foods.
The fifth mistake is improper use of active ingredients in summer. Some ingredients, like vitamin C, can increase pigmentation risk if SPF is not used. In summer, lightweight moisturizing textures are preferable, while intensive anti-aging products like retinol should be used only in the evening.
By avoiding these mistakes, it is possible to maintain skin firmness, even tone, and a natural glow in the long term.
