Five Easy Halloween Snack Recipes: From “Mummy” Sausages to an Ice Hand in Lemonade
Zane Neļķe, communications manager at supermarket chain Lidl Latvija, has shared five Halloween table recipes that use everyday ingredients. They include sausages in puff pastry, mini pizzas, spaghetti, cheese snacks and a drink.

As Halloween approaches, Latvian households are adding themed treats to the pumpkins and costumes. Zane Neļķe, communications manager at the supermarket chain Lidl Latvija, says more people in the country celebrate Halloween each year, so demand for themed snacks, sweets and decorations is growing. In her view, a festive mood can be created with everyday products and a little imagination, without complicated recipes or big spending. The company offers five recipes.
“Mummy” sausages in pastry
Puff pastry is cut into strips about half a centimetre wide and wound around milk sausages, leaving a gap at the top for a “face”. The snacks bake at 180 degrees for about 15 minutes, until the pastry puffs up and turns golden. Once cooled, eyes are drawn on with mustard or mayonnaise. The ingredients make eight to twelve servings.
Mini pizzas with olive spiders
Fresh pizza dough is cut into small squares or rounds, spread with tomato sauce and sprinkled with grated mozzarella. Black olives halved form the spiders’ bodies, and thin strips make the legs. The pizzas bake at 200 degrees for 10–12 minutes. The recipe makes twelve servings.
Spaghetti with mushroom “skulls”
Peeled button mushrooms are halved lengthwise. Two eye holes are pressed out with a drinking straw, and cuts in the stem with a knife tip make “teeth”. The mushrooms are fried in oil with garlic, spaghetti is cooked and mixed with tomato sauce, and the mushrooms are placed on top when serving. The recipe serves three to four.
Cheese “witch brooms”
This snack needs neither an oven nor a pan. String cheese sticks are cut in half, the lower part is slit or torn into thin strips for the bristles, and a salty stick is inserted into the other end. The base of the bristles is tied with a chive or a sprig of greenery. It makes 12–14 servings.
“Bloody” lemonade with an ice hand
The evening before, a disposable glove is filled with drinking water, tied shut and frozen. In a large bowl, 2 litres of cranberry, cherry or pomegranate juice or drink are mixed with 1 litre of lemon or lime flavoured sparkling drink, and the frozen hand is added. It keeps the drink cold and serves as the centrepiece of the table. The total is three litres.
