Police to Intensify Traffic Surveillance on First Workday After Midsummer
Latvia's State Police will step up traffic controls across the country on the first workday after the Midsummer holidays, focusing on drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol.

The State Police of Latvia has announced intensified traffic surveillance on Thursday, June 25, the first workday following the Midsummer (Jāņi) celebrations. Officers will pay special attention to drivers who may have gotten behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances after the festivities.
Police officials emphasize that drivers should only get behind the wheel when fully sober. If alcohol was consumed during the celebrations, people must arrange a safe way home in advance. It is equally important to prevent friends, relatives, or acquaintances from driving while intoxicated. Authorities note that a timely conversation or taking away car keys can often prevent a tragedy.
The police recall that last year during the Midsummer holidays, 15 people were injured and one died in road traffic accidents. This year, the Midsummer break is particularly long, which often correlates with a higher number of serious accidents. Drivers are urged to be especially cautious and responsible.
