Porsche Unveils Mission S Concept in New York, Previewing a Mid-Engine Supercar Platform Above the 911
German sports car maker Porsche unveiled the Mission S concept in New York on 15 October. It previews a new design direction and an announced mid-engine supercar platform positioned above the 911.
German sports car maker Porsche presented the Mission S concept car on 15 October at a pier in Queens, New York, facing the Manhattan skyline. The company describes it as a first look at the brand's evolving design identity and as a signal of a new mid-engine supercar platform positioned above the 911. It matters because, as the dpa news agency reports, Porsche wants to sell fewer but more expensive luxury cars in the future.
What the company says
Dr. Michael Leiters, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG, said the Mission S is not a one-off hypercar but a lasting additional offering that will come in several variants. Porsche says the location was deliberate: the first photos of the mid-engine 550 Spyder were taken at this same pier in 1953.
Tobias Sühlmann, Porsche's head of design, said the concept shows a strategic direction that will soon be carried over into future production models. Yahoo Autos adds that he took the post in February and that this could mean a whole family of models, including a roadster.
Design and interior
The exterior combines torpedo-style fenders, a signature roofline and round headlights reminiscent of the 911. Other historic references include the GT1, the 959 and the 928, from which the wheel design is drawn. At the rear are an active spoiler and a nod to the cooling fan of the 917.
The cabin is built around the driver. Digital surfaces are kept to a minimum, with analog gauges, a small central screen and a physical key to the left of the steering wheel.
Powertrain and differing reports
Yahoo Autos, citing Leiters, reports that the car will not be a pure battery-electric vehicle because there is no demand for one in this segment. The platform is said to be designed for a combustion engine or a hybrid, including a plug-in hybrid. Technical details have not been officially revealed. CarScoops writes that some sources mention a flat-eight but says this is unconfirmed. It also reports that footage leaked online a few hours before the official reveal and that it cannot fully rule out AI involvement.
CarScoops notes that the car has been called a successor to the 918 Spyder, but says Top Gear describes it as aimed at the supercar category with higher volumes. Yahoo Autos adds that the production car's name will not include 911.
