Ollie, a US startup that developed an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant centered on user privacy, will cease operations in a week. Co-founder and CEO Bill Lennon announced on the social network X on Friday that the app will officially close on November 6. The closure shows how hard it can be for smaller players to survive in the crowded AI assistant market.

What Ollie offered

Ollie was a subscription-based service designed to help families stay connected and organized. The app linked to a user's email and calendar and offered tools for booking appointments, planning meals and paying bills. The company had also intended to expand into household budgeting.

Ollie was among the first mainstream apps to achieve SOC 2, a privacy and security compliance standard that companies can earn through an independent audit. In September, the company spoke with TechCrunch about its $7.5 million seed round, led by venture capital firm Khosla Ventures.

Why it is closing

Lennon said the pressures of the fast-growing AI industry had taken their toll. By his account, the team came close to its goals but ultimately could not keep pace. He said that with competitors such as Muse, Instinct and others entering the market, it became harder to stand out, grow and raise the capital needed.

The text-based AI assistant market has expanded rapidly over the past year, as more powerful underlying models have made such applications considerably more useful for daily tasks.

Lennon expressed pride in what the team accomplished and thanked staff, users and investors. Ollie's customers will receive instructions in the coming days on how to export their data and obtain refunds.
