Wired has published a review of the Purple Carrot meal kit, highlighting the quality of its recipes and the freshness of its ingredients. The review notes that ingredients are neatly organized into individual bags, and the foldout recipe cards are well designed and easy to save for future use with or without the service.

The kit includes a mix of fresh produce and prepackaged items such as tofu, instant rice, or spice pouches. While the produce is not guaranteed organic, most ingredients were organic, and all were vegan. The only additional items cooks need are salt, pepper, and cooking oil. However, at least one recipe—butternut squash dumplings—requires a food processor, which is rare among meal kits that usually avoid assuming users have such appliances.

The review describes Purple Carrot's strength as its recipes and fresh ingredients. Some sourcing is local where possible, and the received produce seemed a step above that of most larger kits: poblanos were crisp, herbs fragrant, corn was still on the cob in July, and an avocado arrived unbruised and ripe but not overripe.

This freshness adds confidence but also requires more preparation. The butternut squash dumplings took nearly the advertised hour, but the result was worth it. Most recipes have advertised prep times closer to 30 minutes. For example, rajas avocado tacos with corn are relatively simple, and they can be prepared on a griddle instead of using the oven, taking roughly 20 minutes.
