Podcast on Life in Latgale's Countryside: Marta Gabrusāne Returns to Family Home After 15 Years in England
The third season of the LSM Latgale newsroom podcast "Es izvēlos dzīvi laukos" (I Choose Life in the Countryside) follows young people building their lives in rural Latgale. One of them, Marta Gabrusāne, is starting a new life with her children in the family home after 15 years in England.
Latvia is seeing a pronounced trend of rural depopulation, with remote regions losing residents. Even so, some people deliberately choose to return to the countryside or to start their lives there. They are the focus of the third season of "Es izvēlos dzīvi laukos" (I Choose Life in the Countryside), a podcast by the Latgale newsroom of LSM, Latvia's public media organisation. The season has five episodes.
The main characters are young people who have travelled to countries near and far, and who are now building their lives and work in the Latgale countryside. Their reasons vary: a longing for freedom, quiet and peace, sentiment for an ancestral legacy, home-grown food, and the potential for business opportunities.
Return to the family home
One of the stories is about Marta Gabrusāne. After 15 years in England, she and her children are beginning a new life in the family home, creating their own rural paradise.
