Range Rover Electric first drive: 333-mile luxury EV with 350 kW charging

Our first look and drive of the 2027 Range Rover Electric: efficient motors, 118.5 kWh battery, fast charging, and a quieter cabin.

JLR has finally let us get behind the wheel of its first all-electric Range Rover. The electric motors are 24 percent more efficient than those found in the I-Pace, with response times of 50 milliseconds—far quicker than any conventional engine. Each motor uses copper hairpins (144 per unit) with 0.2-millimeter laminations and a 0.7-millimeter air gap between rotor and stator. Silicon-carbide inverters, standard in modern high-end EVs, can react in under a millisecond, and the power electronics are cleverly packaged into the space where a transmission tunnel would normally sit.

The battery provides a net capacity of 118.5 kWh, arranged as a double stack of cells in ten modules. The cells use nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry from AESC, with aerogel spacers separating them. The pack operates at 800 volts and includes two 'virtual twins' that assist the battery management system. A thermal management system called ThermAssist recovers waste heat, improving range by 7 percent and cutting the energy needed for cabin heating by 40 percent.

On a full charge, the Range Rover Electric is expected to deliver at least 333 miles (536 km) on the EPA cycle—enough for 97 percent of owners' daily driving. For the U.S., the SUV comes with a native NACS port, enabling Tesla Supercharger access, plus ISO15118 plug-and-charge capability. DC fast charging peaks at 350 kW, adding 125 miles (201 km) in 10 minutes and taking 22 minutes for a 10–80 percent charge. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) provides up to 3.6 kW of AC power, with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) support planned for later.

The battery pack lowers the center of gravity by 3.4 inches (85 mm) compared with the V8 model. Standard air suspension with twin-valve dampers, and the aluminum battery frame increases chassis rigidity by 56 percent. Electric propulsion makes the Range Rover Electric 7 decibels quieter than the V8. JLR says it added extra isolation to the front drive unit and paid special attention to the high-voltage cables, which can transmit noise into the cabin. Active noise cancellation relies on ultra-thin membrane speakers developed with Warwick Audio, mounted in the headrests.
