On the evening of 22 October, Latvian State Police stopped an Audi driver on Brīvības gatve in Riga who was doing 154 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. A breath test showed 2.95 per mille of alcohol, and a criminal case has been opened.
Latvian State Police officers stopped an Audi driver on Brīvības gatve in Riga shortly after 11 p.m. on 22 October. The car was travelling at 154 km/h in a zone with a 70 km/h limit. A check showed that the man, born in 1999, was driving with 2.95 per mille of alcohol in his system. He faces a criminal case for drunk driving and administrative proceedings for speeding.
How the stop unfolded
Officers of the Reaction Bureau of the State Police Riga Region Department were carrying out routine traffic monitoring on Brīvības gatve, in the direction from Juglas Street towards Berģu Street, when they noticed an Audi well above the speed limit. They pulled the car over.
The driver's behaviour raised suspicion that he might be intoxicated, so the officers tested the alcohol concentration in his exhaled air. The result was 2.95 per mille.
Consequences for the driver
The man was detained and placed in a short-term detention facility. The police launched administrative proceedings over the speeding and a criminal case over driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police appeal
The State Police say they carry out traffic monitoring every day to prevent dangerous behaviour on the roads and to encourage compliance with traffic rules. Significant speeding and drunk driving endanger not only the driver but also other road users. Police urge motorists to act responsibly and remember that reckless behaviour on the road can have serious consequences.
