Rinkēvičs: Latvia–Belarus border infrastructure improved, but border guards lacking

President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited Piedruja, a village on the Latvian-Belarusian border, to assess the situation in person. Following the visit, he concluded that notable progress has been made in recent times on building up the border infrastructure.

At the same time, the president pointed to a serious problem: a shortage of human resources, specifically border guards, needed to ensure the border is fully staffed and properly protected.

Pāternieki checkpoint question remains open

Rinkēvičs stressed that a final decision on suspending operations at the Pāternieki border control point has still not been made — the matter remains open and requires further consideration.

The visit to the border comes as Latvia's frontier with Belarus continues to be an important national security issue amid the broader regional situation.
