Collisions with wildlife on Latvian roads are rising, while residents say the required procedure is too complicated

The number of collisions with wild animals on Latvian roads is increasing. Almost 1,000 animals have been struck so far this year, according to the State Forest Service (VMD), the agency that oversees forestry and hunting matters in the country. The issue affects every motorist, since the way drivers act after a collision matters for the safety of both people and animals.

Drivers among the dead

State Police data show that this year differs from recent years: three vehicle drivers have also lost their lives in collisions with animals.

Procedure causes confusion

On social media, residents say the recommended course of action after hitting an animal is too complicated. Both the State Forest Service and the Latvian Association of Local Governments (LPS), which represents the country's municipalities, agree with this assessment. In other words, both the sector's agency and municipal representatives admit that the current system is not clear or convenient enough for the people who must use it.
