Sainz reportedly close to new Williams contract
Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz is in the final stages of negotiating a new contract with Williams, a day after the team confirmed a 2027 deal with Alex Albon.

Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, a four-time Grand Prix winner who joined Williams on a two-year deal ahead of the 2025 season, has been negotiating his future with team principal James Vowles. Those talks are reportedly now in their final phase.
Exact financial terms have not been disclosed, but sources indicate Sainz stands to receive a significantly higher salary than is typical for a team of Williams' standing.
A difficult season
Williams has struggled in the current campaign, as the FW48 car has fallen short of expectations. The team currently sits ninth in the Constructors' Championship. Sainz has scored points in four races this season, while teammate Alex Albon has scored just once.
Given these circumstances, retaining an experienced, technically astute driver is seen as critical for the team — Sainz's feedback and attention to detail are considered important to the car's ongoing development.
Word of a possible new Sainz deal comes a day after Williams announced it had already secured Albon on a new contract through the 2027 season.
