Summer Solstice Traditions Unite Latvia and the Desert

During the summer solstice, a Latvian in California's Mojave Desert found surprising parallels between Latvian Jāņi traditions and the desert experience, both centered on sun, reflection, and inner peace.

This year, a Latvian spent the summer solstice in the Mojave Desert, over 8,000 kilometers from home. Despite the starkly different environment, they noticed remarkable similarities between Latvia's Midsummer traditions and the desert's rhythms.

In Latvia, the solstice is a time of peak bloom – meadows are full of flowers, people weave wreaths, light bonfires, sing, and welcome the sunrise. The desert lacks such vivid colors, but closer observation reveals a subtle palette of greens, yellows, violets, and browns. There, too, the sun dictates daily life: midday temperatures exceed 40°C, so activity is limited to early morning and evening.

On June 20, the sun slowly set behind the silhouettes of Joshua trees and giant granite boulders. The next morning, they witnessed the sunrise from the same spot – unconsciously reenacting one of the most beautiful solstice traditions: bidding farewell to the sun and greeting it again.

During the hottest hours, a sound meditation session was led by specialist Leya Lava, who has taught meditation, reiki, and sound therapy for over 20 years. Crystal and metal singing bowls, a gong, a didgeridoo, and other instruments created a calm, unhurried atmosphere. The feeling was surprisingly similar to sitting by a solstice bonfire in Latvia – a moment to pause, let go of daily haste, and listen inward.

The author reflects that while in one part of the world people weave wreaths and sing, in another they meditate and listen to sounds, the core desire is the same: to stop, connect with nature, and hear one's own self. The solstice reminds us that what unites us is more important than what divides us.
