Monitoring results for sixth graders in math and natural sciences lower than expected
According to the Ministry of Education and Science, Latvian students' average knowledge in mathematics and natural sciences declines from grades 3 to 6, while text comprehension improves.

The Ministry of Education and Science has released the results of this spring's monitoring tests, revealing a concerning trend: from grade 3 to grade 6, the average performance of students in mathematics and natural sciences significantly decreases. These data come from national assessments conducted regularly to evaluate student knowledge levels.
In contrast to the math and science results, text comprehension scores show improvement over the same period, indicating a divergent development of skills across different subjects. The ministry emphasizes that such monitoring studies are a crucial tool for identifying strengths and weaknesses in the education system.
Schools and teachers are urged to analyze the data carefully and seek ways to enhance the effectiveness of teaching in math and natural sciences. Measures will also be taken to ensure students maintain interest in these subjects and retain an adequate knowledge level.
The monitoring results are part of the Sustainable Development Strategy in education, which mandates ongoing quality oversight and improvement. Experts note that more attention should be paid to teaching methods and resources, especially in elementary school, to counter the decline in knowledge.
