SpaceX finally tows Starship into port after 24 days adrift in Indian Ocean

SpaceX managed to bring a Starship test vehicle into port after nearly a month at sea, despite Elon Musk saying just last week the recovery was not looking good. Data from the recovered heat shield could inform future upgrades.

SpaceX has successfully towed a Starship vehicle into port on Christmas Island after 24 days at sea, an outcome that seemed uncertain just a week earlier when CEO Elon Musk said the recovery effort was "not looking good."

Crews kept the spacecraft afloat in rough seas by strapping air-filled Yokohama fenders around its hull. This particular vehicle will not fly again: splashing down in the ocean exposed its engines, stainless steel structure, and electronics to corrosive salt water, and the vehicle was further damaged when it tipped over after splashdown.

Why the heat shield matters

Starship's heat shield, built from roughly 18,000 ceramic tiles, is central to SpaceX's goal of making the vehicle fully and rapidly reusable. Unlike NASA's Space Shuttle, whose tiles needed replacement and touch-ups after every flight, SpaceX wants to avoid tile swaps and even detailed inspections between flights, aiming to turn around future vehicles multiple times a day.

During SpaceX's first quarterly earnings call on August 4, Musk described the heat shield problem as "solved." Other industry experts remain less certain. While the tiles appeared to be in better shape after the most recent reentry than in previous flights, questions remain about whether they can withstand the high flight cadence SpaceX envisions for lunar and Mars bases or large constellations of orbital data centers.

Recovering the tiles for laboratory testing, or potentially reusing them on future flights, could help answer that question. Going forward, SpaceX intends to catch future Starships directly at the launch site using mechanical arms on the launch tower during descent, a method meant to speed up reuse.
