A serious rail accident took place on the Madrid–Seville line near Toledo, Spain, shortly before 9am on 28 October. A Renfe AVE high-speed train carrying 397 passengers ran into the back of a train operated by the private company Iryo, which had stopped after a reported signal fault. Regional officials said 58 people needed hospital treatment, roughly 50 of them with serious injuries.

The crash site

The collision happened at kilometre 118, between Mora, Orgaz and Urda. The impact pushed two carriages off the tracks. The Iryo service had 147 people on board, including a baby.

Rescue operation

Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME) has released footage showing rescuers searching the wreckage. About 100 UME personnel are at the scene, supported by sniffer dogs and specialist units that are working through the twisted metal. Civil Guard officers and firefighters are also assisting.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Toledo. Ambulances kept arriving throughout the morning, and police cordoned off the entrances.

Reaction

King Felipe VI sent condolences to the victims and their families. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed solidarity and support.

It is the second major rail accident in Spain this year. In January, a crash in the south of the country killed 45 people.
