Stanford Study: AI Hits Entry-Level Jobs Hardest
Stanford researchers found artificial intelligence is disproportionately eroding entry-level job growth while employment for experienced workers keeps rising. Higher education appears to soften, but not eliminate, the effect.

A new analysis from Stanford University researchers finds that artificial intelligence's impact on the labor market is uneven, with entry-level positions bearing the brunt while jobs for experienced workers continue to grow.
Codified versus tacit knowledge
The researchers theorized that AI would more heavily affect occupations reliant on "codified" knowledge — formal, standardized information that can be taught through education, textbooks, or written procedures. By contrast, jobs built around "tacit" knowledge, gained through practice, mentorship, and repeated real-world exposure, tend to see AI complement rather than replace experienced workers.
To test this idea, the team used the required level of formal education listed in the O*NET occupational database as a stand-in for how much a given job depends on codified knowledge. Breaking down employment figures, they found that occupations with heavier reliance on codified knowledge showed slower growth in entry-level hiring, while occupations weighted toward tacit knowledge saw faster employment growth among mid-career and senior workers.
Education as a partial buffer
The study also found that higher education can somewhat cushion AI's employment effects. In occupations with a larger share of college graduates, the gap between AI-exposed and less-exposed jobs was smaller. In fields with fewer college graduates, however, the divide was sharp: the least AI-exposed occupations kept adding jobs, while the most exposed ones saw employment decline.
Lead researcher Erik Brynjolfsson told The Washington Post that current trends point toward a labor market where jobs held by people already working in the pre-AI era largely persist, even as opportunities for the incoming generation of workers quietly shrink. He said the entry-level effects being measured are real, persistent, and widening, raising concern that overall employment could hold steady even as the path for career starters narrows.
