Tallinna Vesi urges residents to prepare for heavy rainfall
Heavy downpours are expected in Tallinn and its surroundings on the evening of August 22 and overnight into August 23, potentially straining the sewage system. Water utility Tallinna Vesi is advising residents to take precautions in advance.

According to a weather forecast, Tallinn and its surrounding area could see 50 to 100 mm of rainfall on the evening of August 22 and during the night leading into August 23. Water company Tallinna Vesi's press service reported the forecast, warning that the heavy rain could cause disruptions or overloading in the sewage system.
Urmas Kütt, head of Tallinna Vesi's pipeline operations department, is urging residents to take steps to lower flood-related risks before the rain arrives. Recommended measures include clearing gutters, pipes and drains of leaves and debris, closing basement windows, and sealing doors where water could enter a building — particularly for properties situated below street level. Where possible, waterproof barriers should be installed.
Valuable items stored in basements should be moved to higher ground in case of flooding. Residents are also advised to avoid parking in underground garages or below-ground-level parking areas, since the risk of flooding is greater there.
During and immediately after the rain, households should avoid heavy water use so as not to add further strain on the sewage system. The company also reminds residents that a flooded basement should not be entered until the risk of electric shock has been ruled out.
In the event of flooding, manhole covers on streets may shift out of place, so pedestrians and drivers alike are advised to stay alert. Anyone facing problems can contact Tallinna Vesi's emergency service at 626 2400 or by email at tvesi@tvesi.ee.
