Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said on the social network X that the US electric vehicle maker will stop producing its Cybertruck pickup next year. The company plans to use the freed-up factory space to build more of its two-seater Cybercab robotaxis, which are designed to operate without a driver.

The decision follows a few years of weak sales. When Musk handed over the first Cybertrucks to customers in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 a year. Over the last three years, however, the company has sold only tens of thousands in total.

A shift toward AI and robotics

Tesla is trying to become a company focused on artificial intelligence and robotics, and its robotaxi ambitions are a major part of that. For the past two months, it has been running Cybercabs on the streets of Austin, Texas, where it is headquartered. Tesla says there have been no major incidents so far and plans to expand Cybercab operations to Dallas later this month. It also operates robotaxi versions of its Model Y SUV in Austin, Houston and Dallas, as well as in three Florida cities.

The Cybertruck is the third product Tesla has discontinued in support of these goals. Earlier this year, the company decided to end production of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, and to use that factory space to make Optimus humanoid robots.

From big promises to weak sales

The Cybertruck was first announced in 2019. Tesla then said it would start at under $40,000 and offer up to 500 miles of range. It reached neither figure: production was delayed by two years, partly because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and when the truck reached the market in late 2023 the base price was around $60,000 and top-end range was more than 100 miles lower.

The truck has struggled in the market since. Buyers did not warm to its polarizing design, especially at a higher-than-expected price. In 2024, its first full sales year, Musk became a major financial backer of Donald Trump, making the vehicle a target for protesters. That continued into 2025, when Musk led the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, which fired thousands of federal workers.
