A test drive from Kolka to Ainaži in rainy conditions offered a chance to evaluate the handling, sound insulation and features of four premium electric vehicles: Volvo EX90, Audi A6 e-tron, XPENG G9 and Lexus RZ.

Lexus RZ and Volvo EX90

The Lexus RZ550e features an unusual steer-by-wire system with no mechanical link to the wheels, but delivers strong acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. It is only offered in F Sport trim, starting at 82,000 euros, with over 400 horsepower and a 77 kWh battery.

The Volvo EX90 is described as large and bright, with a spacious cabin that doesn't feel cramped despite having three rows of seats. The 2027 model year version features an 800-volt platform, a 106 kWh battery, and up to 680 horsepower in the Twin Motor Performance trim, with range exceeding 600 km. Pricing starts above 90,000 euros.

XPENG G9 and Audi A6 e-tron

The XPENG G9 stands out for its ability to charge its 93 kWh battery at up to 450 kilowatts, plus an additional entertainment screen for the passenger. The model produces 575 horsepower with a claimed range of up to 600 km, or around 500 km in real-world conditions. Driving modes change the car's character, though steering and suspension settings must be adjusted separately.

The Audi A6 e-tron differs from the others with its liftback body style, sitting lower and being noticeably noisier while driving, particularly from tire noise. A fully-equipped version costs 109,000 euros, combining Audi's familiar, intuitive controls and clear displays with the Volkswagen Group's characteristic grainy rearview camera.

The straight-line distance from Kolka to Ainaži is just over 100 kilometers, but by road it stretches to nearly 275 kilometers, as the route passes through Riga or its often-congested bypass.
