Tet customer criticizes paid cybersecurity offer, company explains the difference
A Threads post from a Tet customer questioning why data protection costs extra sparked online debate. Company representatives and other users clarified that basic network protection is already free, while the paid service covers broader risks.

A Tet customer named Eduards voiced frustration on the social platform Threads over the telecom company's cybersecurity offering, asking why customers must pay extra for data protection while already using Tet's services. He characterized it as being told to use the company's services but pay more if you don't want your data stolen.
The post triggered a wider discussion in the comments, with users trying to clarify exactly what Tet's security offerings include.
Clarifications in the discussion
One commenter, Gita, pointed out that basic network security protection is already built in for Tet customers at no extra cost, covering anyone using the Tet network. She added that the additional paid services also apply to situations outside the Tet network — for example, if someone uses mobile internet to access a fake online store and loses money, the paid service provides reimbursement of up to 5,000 euros.
Another commenter, Normunds, suggested that offering extra cybersecurity services could be a way to capitalize on artificially cultivated public anxiety about online safety to expand subscription revenue. He argued that offering antivirus protection for iPhones, for instance, amounts to profiting from uninformed customers.
Tet's response
Company representatives explained in the discussion that they monitor customers' internet security around the clock regardless of which services are subscribed to — but this refers to general network-level protection. The rest, they said, depends on the customer's own behavior, such as avoiding suspicious websites or entering personal data where it shouldn't be shared. Tet noted that modern scammers operate in more sophisticated ways, and a firewall alone no longer protects against a hacked email or bank account. This is where cyber risk insurance comes in, covering cyber fraud, fake online stores, and digital identity theft — including incidents that occur outside the customer's home internet connection.
