TikTok introduces AI shopping assistant and one-click checkout

TikTok has launched a conversational AI assistant for product discovery and a new checkout feature that lets users buy items directly from their video feed. The moves aim to keep more of the shopping journey — and revenue — inside the app.

TikTok announced two new features on Monday aimed at deepening its e-commerce push: a conversational AI assistant for shopping and a one-click checkout option built directly into the app's main video feed.

The new tool, called Shopping Assistant, is designed to help users discover and choose products. According to TikTok, the assistant keeps track of conversation context and remembers a user's preferences throughout an interaction, offering guidance on product details, shipping, sizing, availability, and completing a purchase.

Alongside it, the new checkout feature allows users to buy directly from a brand without leaving the For You feed, removing the need to navigate to a separate app or website to finish a purchase.

Keeping users inside the app

The changes could let TikTok capture a larger share of users' shopping journeys and the transaction value that comes with them. By combining a shopping assistant with built-in payments, the platform is turning its discovery-driven feed into a place where users can get instant answers about products and purchase on the spot. The approach also appears aimed at discouraging users from turning to outside AI tools, such as ChatGPT, when they have product-related questions.

TikTok says the new features were built in partnership with several commerce and payment platforms, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe.

A broader e-commerce strategy

Until now, TikTok Shop has served as the company's main engine for e-commerce. The new tools suggest TikTok wants to weave shopping functionality more broadly throughout the app rather than relying solely on its dedicated shop section.

The expansion comes as TikTok's influence on shopping behavior keeps growing. An economic impact report the company released the previous week found that activity on the platform helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses, and 54 million Americans said they had bought a product after watching a TikTok video. TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023, and research firm eMarketer estimates it generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025 — roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce.
