One in Three Latvians Unaware of Summer First Aid Kit Essentials
A survey shows 36% of Latvians don't know what to include in a summer first aid kit. A pharmacist provides advice on essential items.

According to a survey conducted by "Mēness aptieka" and research agency "Norstat", 36% of Latvian residents admit they have not thought about or do not know what should be in a summer first aid kit. Meanwhile, 64% believe they know which medications and medical supplies are necessary.
Sun Protection
Pharmacist Ērika Pētersone recommends using a sunscreen with at least SPF 50, water-resistant, and protecting against both UVA and UVB rays. It should be applied 15 minutes before going outside, even on cloudy days. After sun exposure, creams with aloe vera, sea buckthorn, or calendula are suggested; for redness, a dexpanthenol aerosol. Seek medical attention for severe burns, weakness, fever, or nausea.
Cuts and Bruises
Scrapes should be rinsed with a non-irritating wound cleaner for several days. If the wound does not become red or produce discharge, products with dexpanthenol or hyaluronic acid can be used. The kit should include various-sized antibacterial plasters, pain relief plasters, elastic bandages, and arnica ointment for bruises.
Blisters
To prevent blisters, wear socks and use plasters on textile base where shoes rub. Do not cut off the blister skin to avoid infection. Silicone plasters provide cushioning and maintain moisture balance.
Hydration
In hot weather, a person can lose up to two liters of fluid per hour, along with electrolytes. Powders or tablets for rehydration, dissolved in water, restore sodium, potassium, and magnesium levels.
Insect Bites and Allergies
Include repellents, antihistamines, and topical gels such as dimethindene (from 1 month of age) or diphenhydramine (from 2 years). For severe reactions, oral antihistamines are recommended. Also include a tick removal tool; after removal, disinfect the bite with chlorhexidine.
Digestion
For digestive issues, enzymes, antispasmodics, and enterosorbents with silicon dioxide are useful. In case of poisoning, activated charcoal (1 tablet per 10 kg body weight). For diarrhea, white clay products. Consult a doctor if symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, fever) last more than four days.
The pharmacist reminds to bring prescribed medications for chronic conditions. Proper preparation ensures a worry-free summer.
