City of Türi Celebrates Centenary: Internationally Acclaimed Conductor Leads Festive Concert
Türi celebrated the centenary of its city status, with a festive concert featuring world-renowned conductor Kristiina Poska and vocal ensemble Estonian Voices.

This week, several Estonian towns are marking their centenaries. After Põltsamaa and Tapa earlier in the week, Wednesday was the turn of Tõrva and Türi. Türi, which received its city rights 100 years ago, held a grand celebration centered around a concert by internationally renowned conductor Kristiina Poska.
Born in Türi, Poska conducted the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. "What could be better than Beethoven? His Fifth is one of the most famous classical works. Per aspera ad astra – from darkness to light – it's a message that is always relevant," Poska told ETV's "Aktuaalne kaamera." She emphasized the special significance of performing in her hometown. "Home is home. This is perhaps the most special concert ever. I am always connected to Türi because my mother still lives here, and I visit regularly. Türi is very dear and close to my heart," she said.
The concert also featured the vocal ensemble Estonian Voices, two of whose members, Mikk and Mirjam Dede, are also from Türi. Poska, who has conducted leading orchestras in London, Tokyo, Paris, and Berlin, noted the town's strong potential and bright future. "I am truly delighted that Türi is not a small, dying town but quite the opposite – it is flourishing and blossoming more and more," Poska remarked.
The day's festivities began in the morning at the town hall, where residents were treated to cake and coffee. Türi's development was given a significant boost by the construction of a railway and a factory a quarter of a century before it was granted city status.
