Valka Prepares Fountains for Winter, Lugaži Square Fountain to Run Until First Frosts
Workers of the Valka municipality began removing fountain mechanisms for winter storage on Thursday. The lit fountain in Lugaži Square will keep running until the first frosts, but not beyond Lāčplēsis Day.

As the summer season ends, workers from the Management Department of the Valka municipality removed fountain mechanisms from two locations on Thursday: the pond on Rūjienas Street opposite the “Walk” shopping centre, and the area of the Pedele river nature trail. The equipment is to be stored over winter so that it can be used again next spring.
Lugaži Square fountain still running
The illuminated fountain in Lugaži Square remains in the water for now. Viktors Bavins, head of the Management Department, said it will operate until the first frosts. As Lāčplēsis Day approaches, the fountain will stop working, although he could not yet give an exact date. He encouraged people to enjoy the fountain while the weather allows.
The square ahead of the national holiday
For the national holiday, a metal outline of Latvia is to be set up in the square. Candles will be able to be placed in it.
The newspaper “Ziemeļlatvija” also spoke to residents about Lugaži Square. According to what they said, the square looks colourful in autumn, with autumn flowers and ornamental shrubs still in bloom and the fountain operating.
