Inmates at Valmiera prison learning new trades

About a quarter of inmates at Valmiera prison are currently employed, with some using their time behind bars to learn a new profession. Prison management believes this helps former inmates find work and avoid reoffending after release.

Roughly a quarter of all inmates at Valmiera prison are currently working, and some of them are using their time serving sentences to acquire an entirely new profession rather than simply passing the days in custody.

Prison management says it is convinced that gaining employment skills and learning a trade while incarcerated is an important step toward a successful return to normal life after release. Skills picked up during imprisonment can make it considerably easier for former inmates to find a job once they are free.

Aim: fewer repeat offences

According to prison officials, employment and vocational development during incarceration help former convicts reintegrate into everyday life and reduce the likelihood that they will commit crimes again after release.

The topic was covered in more detail on the LSM programme "Обсудим вечером," which examined how acquiring work skills in prison can change the future course of inmates' lives.
