State Police Buy Three Portable Vehicle Weighing Kits for €119,790
Latvia's State Police have procured three portable vehicle scale sets to strengthen freight transport checks across the country. The force says the main goal is preventive: reducing the number of overloaded vehicles on state roads.

The State Police of Latvia (VP) have bought three portable, non-automatic vehicle weighing kits for €119,790 to strengthen checks on freight transport on the country's roads. The police told the news agency LETA about the purchase. The new equipment is meant to make it easier to check vehicles' actual weight and axle loads, improving traffic oversight nationwide.
What the equipment is for
The police explain that the purchase adds to their technical equipment and increases their capacity to monitor freight transport. The aim is to ensure that patrol units across Latvia have the necessary weighing tools. According to the VP, inspection capabilities will broaden, and checks can be carried out more evenly in different parts of the country.
At the same time, the force stresses that buying the scales does not in itself mean a significant rise in the number of separate enforcement actions or raids. Instead, it provides better technical means for carrying out existing daily control tasks. As the police put it, the main objective is preventive: to cut the number of overloaded vehicles on state roads.
Why overloading is a problem
The State Police note that overloaded vehicles raise road safety risks and contribute to damage to road infrastructure. They also harm fair competition in the road haulage sector.
Procurement winner
The tender was won by the company SIA "Labochema Latvija". Last year its turnover was €3,430,307 and its profit €60,057. The company is owned by "Labochema LT", a firm registered in Lithuania.
