Warren Spector, founding father of immersive sims, retires from game development
Deus Ex creator Warren Spector has announced his retirement after nearly 44 years in the industry, planning to focus on writing, reading and lecturing.

Warren Spector, the creator of the Deus Ex franchise, announced on LinkedIn that he is retiring from game development. He noted he was approaching his 44th year as a developer, having worked on tabletop games and 17 digital games, led both small and large teams, and mentored many people in their careers.
Spector said his age and health are now catching up with him, prompting the decision. Going forward, he plans to write books, read extensively, give lectures and possibly take on consulting work. He added that there are still three games he would like to make, but that the business has changed and no longer brings him the same enjoyment.
He acknowledged having attempted to retire before and changing his mind, but said he believes this time is different.
A pioneer of immersive sims
Spector is widely regarded as a founding father of the immersive sim genre, games characterized by giving players freedom to solve problems in multiple ways. On Deus Ex, in which players take on the role of an anti-terrorism agent in a dystopian cyberpunk setting, he also served as director and producer.
He also worked on several Ultima titles as producer and writer, and directed Disney's Epic Mickey for the Wii. His most recent project was the stealth-action heist game Thick As Thieves, released just a few months ago. Spector was also involved with System Shock 3, though Tencent later took over the project and its current status remains unclear.
